Runner convert to Pilates
I am not good at doing the exercises on my own I try occasionally but life gets very busy and so the classes really work for me especially if I have had a tense week (most weeks) and been running. I think you should know Pilates has been a revelation for me and I really feel the benefit even if do struggle to get the exercises right.

Having signed up for a Yoga and Pilates Retreat earlier this year, I was in a panic about not having done any Pilates for a few years and worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up, then a flier popped through my door, just at the right time, and I found Betsy!
She offered me a “quick refresher” course on a one-to-one basis on the reformer to gt me “retreat ready” and I haven’t looked back.
Her enthusiasm and expertise are infectious, she encourages me to push myself while still feeling I am in control of how much I am doing.
After just a few weeks I was ready for my retreat and the instructor there commented on my good technique.
I have continued to have one-to-one sessions on the reformer as well as joining a mat class and I feel much better in myself for it.
My posture is better, I sleep better and I feel much more flexible.
there are many Pilates classes in my area – mostly run by fitness instructors who have studied Pilates as an “add-on” to their own qualifications. Betsy is the real deal and is a fully trained and qualified Pilates and Yoga instructor – the difference is immediately obvious when you attend one of her classes.

“I joined Betsy’s Pilates Beginners classes in early 2015 following an injury to my lower back. The intention was to develop better core strength to avoid repeatedly hurting myself. Since starting I have found that I really enjoy the classes and look forward to Wednesday evenings. I have tried to analyse what it is that makes the classes so enjoyable and ended up with the following reasons, they are not is order of preference as I don’t think I have one so take your pick about what is important to you. 1) Having started classes through injury, Betsy has made sure that whatever exercise I do, the injury is taken into consideration so as to avoid making it worse. There are others in the class with joint/injury concerns and these are also taken into account. This shows a high level of awareness from Betsy to each of her students. 2) The classes are FUN, while you will work hard there is always a sense that what ever it is you are doing, however hard you are finding it, it is fun. 3) The beginners classes follow a set routine so you do much the same exercises each week, this means you can see that you are improving, exercises that you really struggled with at the beginning become noticeably easier and your technique improves. 4) As you improve and feel you want to be challenged further, Betsy runs “Improver” classes. I am not ready for those yet. 5) The classes are small so there is enough time for each person to get some 1-2-1 attention, having done other group exercise classes this I feel is important. 6) There is good mix of men and women, I don’t know but I think this may be unusual. So don’t worry about being the only male in the class. So, take your pick. Those are the reasons I enjoy the classes, would I recommend them to my best friend? Yes I would.””

Each have their specific benefits; Pilates for core strengthening and yoga for flexibility and relaxation. I have enjoyed both. Pilates is quite a work out and, if you are up for it, you can really go for it and feel the burn! Yoga is more subtle but for me the improved flexibility and joint opening has been hugely beneficial. The back pain that used to be a regular part of life has just about disappeared. That’s got to be worth a few pounds a week of anyone’s money! With both disciplines Betsy encourages you to work to your “edge”. “I am so going to miss Betsy’s classes, she made them so enjoyable…I feel I have truly accomplished something under Betsy’s guidance. I have had a dodgy lower back for several years and always took the anti-inflammatory tablets and pain killers each year on the annual skiing holiday…so I enrolled in Betsy’s classes. It took a while, with me attending the Beginners course of classes more then once. But Betsy gave me the confidence to move on to the Improver classes, and I can honestly say that my 2014 skiing was pain free, my fitness had improved and I kept up with my husband on the slopes, just! At 60 years plus, and for any age, I wholeheartedly recommend Betsy’s Pilates classes. She is a lovely lady who will make you feel most welcome.”

Betsy were highly recommended to me and so my daughter and I had a private session. Betsy gave a great introduction to both understand Pilates and her bespoke approach . We subsequently did 3 sets of classes with her and were disappointed when she had to move away with her husband. The classes have done wonders for my back and provided a very entertaining way of keeping fit. My daughter also enjoyed them immensely and they do appeal to all levels and ages.”

“Betsy is a wonderful teacher, she has a very calming influence which means you immediately feel relaxed in her presence. When I fell pregnant I immediately told Betsy in confidence, as I was unsure as to whether I should continue with yoga classes or not, as my pregnancy at the time was considered to be high risk. Betsy reassured me that she could tailor my yoga positions so that I could continue to practice yoga in a safe environment, she did all of this very subtly throughout the class so that my fellow class mates were none the wiser of my pregnancy, until the second trimester when I felt ready to announce the news. I am so glad that I continued with yoga throughout my pregnancy as I am sure it was the reason that I had a quick and easy labor. I also feel that the yoga enabled me to bounce back from birth very quickly so that I was ready to be a new Mummy! Betsy I will really miss you.”
